The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury’s “Pick It Up Calcasieu” Program has been awarded a $10,000 Healthy Communities Grant from Keep Louisiana Beautiful.
Through the Keep Louisiana Beautiful Healthy Communities Grant Program, the state’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism awarded the 2025-26 grant to Pick It Up Calcasieu to support litter prevention, education, enforcement and waste reduction efforts.
“Every time a volunteer signs up for a cleanup and every time a young person learns from our TrashFormer robot about picking up litter, we all win,” said Wyvette Pryor-Cousin, Litter Manager and Assistant Director of the Police Jury’s Department of Public Health Services. “We’re making Calcasieu Parish cleaner one citizen at a time.”
“We’re proud of the work our litter team is doing and the impact the Pick It Up Calcasieu program continues to make across the entire parish,” said Police Jury President Brian Abshire. “This grant will strengthen our cleanup and prevention efforts in every part of Calcasieu, while also providing much-needed support to some of our most impacted areas, especially our rural communities. It will allow us to expand these efforts through stronger community partnerships and volunteer support.”
Keep Louisiana Beautiful is a state program that works with local nonprofits and government agencies to support communities through litter prevention, education and sustainability initiatives.
The Healthy Communities Grant provides funding for local projects and programs that promote behavioral changes to improve the appearance of communities across Louisiana.
Pryor-Cousin said the grant funds will be used to purchase litter grabbers, safety vests and trash bags for the Adopt-a-Spot Program.
Pick It Up Calcasieu was one of 22 recipients of Healthy Communities Grants awarded to eligible organizations, including Louisiana Parishes, municipalities, state agencies, governmental entities, political subdivisions, schools, colleges, universities, nonprofit organizations and Keep Louisiana Beautiful affiliates.
