The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury held a dedication ceremony on Tuesday at Mallard Junction Park to officially rename its Fitness Court the “Collins-Mayo Fitness Court.”
The new name honors two late Police Jurors who both represented District 2 – Calvin Collins and James Mayo.
Collins passed away Feb. 9, 2020, at the age of 80. He served five terms on the Police Jury from 1996-2012 and again from 2016-2020.
During his tenure, Collins was instrumental in several infrastructure projects for District 2, including the construction of the Allen P. August Annex, enhancements to Mallard Junction Park, road and drainage improvements, computer upgrades on water treatment systems, and extended waterlines.
Mayo passed away on Dec. 13, 2014, at the age of 52. Elected in 2011, he was serving his first term on the Police Jury. He served as Vice-President in 2013 and as chairman of the Public Works Committee.
He was also the inspiration for the Police Jury’s the annual “Christmas at the Courthouse” event. He always said his dream was to see the Historic Co
urthouse lit up and decorated for Christmas – and in December 2015, the Police Jury held the first event in his honor.
The Collins-Mayo Fitness Court was unveiled at the park on April 9.
The open-air fitness court allows users to work out by leveraging their own body weight at different angles and levels of resistance. The entire workout can be completed in seven minutes, with each exercise lasting 45 seconds followed by a 15-second rest. Users can follow instructions featured at each station or they can download the free “Fitness Court” app.
