Mosquito Control Uses Light Traps to Help Combat Parish's Mosquito Populations

Post Date:06/11/2021

Calcasieu Parish Mosquito Control routinely collects mosquitoes from 38 New Jersey Light Traps located all throughout the parish.

The traps, which help Mosquito Control determine where the greatest populations of biting, nighttime mosquitoes are located, automatically turn on at sunset and off at sunrise. From March until November, pest control technicians check them twice weekly. They bring the mosquito collections to the lab, where lab specialists sort the mosquitoes by species and record mosquito counts.

This data helps Mosquito Control determine which areas need treatment using either spray trucks or the planes. For more information on mosquito sampling and surveillance, visit calcasieuparish.gov/mosquitocontrol.
